Harry Potter Dumbledores 5 Greatest Strengths (& His 5 Weaknesses)
Dumbledore is a powerful and talented wizard and a complicated person, while he does have many positive attributes, he also has very negative ones.

When Albus Dumbledore is first introduced in the Harry Potter series, he’s a mysterious and magical mentor figure that seems overly good gentle. While Dumbledore might be the one orchestrating everything to defeat Voldemort, it’s eventually revealed that he’s not as innocent as he seemed.
Dumbledore is a powerful and talented wizard and a complicated person, and he does have many positive attributes and strengths. However, it’s also worth pointing out his weaknesses.
10 Weakness: He was very distant and aloof

Dumbledore can be rather charming, engaging, and eccentric, so it might not seem at first like he’s an aloof person. However, he is rather to himself and secretive.
He doesn’t really reveal a lot about himself to anyone it seems, especially not the darker parts of his past. This is why Harry ends up feeling so betrayed by him when he learns about Dumbledore’s complicated history.
9 Strength: He was willing to work hard

In many ways, Dumbledore is naturally gifted and talented. However, he doesn’t just skate by in his life either.
He clearly is very committed to the cause of taking down Voldemort and his followers, and he pretty much devotes the rest of his life to doing this. He’s extremely dogged in this pursuit, and he works tirelessly and even creates the Order of the Phoenix.
8 Weakness: He played favorites

One criticism that many fans of the series make about Dumbledore is that he played favorites when it came to his students.
As the Headmaster of Hogwarts, it was his responsibility to look after every student and to at least treat each Hogwarts house the same. However, he exhibited pretty blatant favoritism towards the Gyrrinfdors and especially toward Harry.
7 Strength: He wanted to make the world a better place

Harry, as well as fans, was shocked when he learned that Dumbledore used to be close with Grindelwald and that he was anti-Muggle and Muggle-born. This truth definitely changes how fans viewed Dumbledore.
While it’s hard to say whether or not Dumbledore’s motivations for defeating Voldemort were completely pure, as he was definitely carrying a lot of guilt, he did undoubtedly do everything he could to take him down.
6 Strength: He learned from some of his worst mistakes

It’s hard not to judge Dumbledore for the awful past choices that he made, and he deserves a lot of criticism for this. However, unlike other characters like Snape, Dumbledore did at least seem to completely change his ideology.
While Snape was more selfishly motivated to leave Voldemort, Dumbledore did seem to have a change of heart and to become more focused on equality and justice.
5 Weakness: His arrogance

Dumbledore is a very powerful man who is skilled in magic and has a lot of influence in the wizarding world. So, while it’s not bad for him to have a good awareness of his own talent and position, he could be arrogant at times.
He didn’t always see his own biases or blind spots, and he should have trusted and relied on others more than just himself. He often was pulling strings behind the scenes without other people knowing.
4 Strength: His intellect

While Dumbledore could sometimes value his own opinions too highly, there’s no denying that his intelligence was one of his greatest strengths. Dumbledore was smart in many ways including book smart, and he was also rather good at reading people and their intentions.
In fact, while Dumbledore was a Gryffindor during his time at school, he does have many Ravenclaw traits. But, the way he uses intellect is more like a Gryffindor than a Ravenclaw.
3 Weakness: His tendency to manipulate and lie

One of the absolute worst and most frustrating things about Dumbledore as a character was that he was highly manipulative. He would keep secrets and tell half-truths all the time, and the biggest example of this is how he treated Harry over the years.
He avoided telling him details about Voldemort and about Dumbledore’s own past.
2 Strength: He was extremely powerful at magic

While this point doesn’t have anything to do with Dumbledore's personality, it is worth noting because it influenced so much of the plot. Dumbledore was such a talented wizard that he was a rival to Voldemort.
Dumbledore was one of the only people that Voldemort was really scared of, and fans saw Dumbledore's immense skill during his duel with Voldemort at the end of The Order of the Phoenix.
1 Weakness: He was willing to risk others’ lives

The worst thing about Dumbledore was how willing he was to sacrifice others to achieve his ends. While the goal of defeating Voldemort was worthy, it seems like Dumbledore was still too invested in the flawed ideology of “for the greater good” because he was fine to lie to and even sacrifice Harry.
While Harry would likely have still sacrificed himself, he should have been given more of a choice ahead of time.
