Harry Potter 10 Worst Prisoners In Azkaban Ranked
Azkaban hosts some of the worst wizards in the wizarding world, from deatheaters to murderers. Let's look at some of the worst prisoners Azkaban has.
We'll now take a look at 10 of the worst inmates who were put behind bars, explaining our reasoning as we go along. Starting with somebody who you might not have expected...
10 Mrs. Crouch
If you're only a fan of the Harry Potter movies, rather than the source material, then chances are you won't be too familiar with Mrs. Crouch. In the books, it's explained that she ended up in Azkaban prison by using Polyjuice Potion in order to transform into son Barty Crouch Jr, allowing him to go free as a result.
While a mother's love should be commended, it's a really bad thing for her to do. She sets a dangerous man free, one who had tortured Frank and Alice Longbottom into insanity. And while she dies behind bars she should have been regretful in the afterlife. Barty would go on to murder his father, Barty Crouch Sr, and commits many other crimes before eventually being subject to the Dementor's kiss.
9 Igor Karkaroff
While Igor Karkaroff may have denounced the old ways by the time he becomes Durmstrang headmaster during the events of the Goblet of Fire, he's worthy of inclusion based on the fact he's a repulsive, arrogant and self-centered individual.
He was put in Azkaban after torturing innocent muggles on Lord Voldemort's orders. When the Dark Lord returns to full power he goes into hiding and his body eventually rocks up in the Shrieking Shack in the Half-Blood Prince book. It seems his old friends, many of which he snitched on, caught up to him in the end...
8 Lucius Malfoy
Lucius Malfoy is put in Azkaban after a botched break-in to the Ministry of Magic during the events of the Order of the Phoenix. He's a loyal servant to the Dark Lord at this point but, upon failing to retrieve the prophecy his master wants, he soon falls out of favor.
The only reason Lucius isn't higher on this list because he's somewhat redeemed by the end. He doesn't fight like the rest of the Death Eaters at the Battle of Hogwarts and is actually spared more time behind bars as a result of Narcissa Malfoy helping Harry fake his death. That said, he definitely deserved a spell in jail the first time around.
7 Augustus Rookwood
Augustus Rookwood is another character referenced more in the books than in the movies. But he's another dangerous inmate, particularly given his gift for working in the shadows.
It's Rookwood who acts as a mole within the Ministry of Magic, repeatedly relaying crucial information to Lord Voldemort as the villain seeks to rule the wizarding world. Igor Karkaroff gives his name up when put in front of a jury at Azkaban but he's able to escape in the Order of the Phoenix. Rockwood serves Voldemort faithfully and unflinchingly yet is eventually taken down by Aberforth Dumbledore during the Battle of Hogwarts.
6 Marvolo Gaunt
It's a close call for this one. Marvolo Gaunt and his son, Morfin Gaunt, are two extremely vile characters. And both spend time in Azkaban prison.
Marvolo is violent and bigoted, somebody who treats his daughter Merope Gaunt - the mother of Lord Voldemort - with nothing but hatred and disdain. He hates muggles and anybody who protects them, eventually resulting in a confrontation with the Ministry of Magic worker Bob Ogden. He's sentenced to six months imprisonment for attacking Wizard police, resisting arrest, obstruction of justice, attempted assault on a witch, and contempt of Wizengamot.
5 Morfin Gaunt
As mentioned above, Morfin Gaunt is just as abhorrent as his father. And he's sentenced to jail in 1925, too, for being Marvolo's accomplice - and a host of many other crimes, too.
He regularly tortured Merope for his father's entertainment and, like Marvolo, possessed a deep loathing for all non-magical beings. Ironically he ends up dying in Azkaban for a crime he didn't commit, with Lord Voldemort framing him for the murders of the Riddles in Little Hangleton. We're being sarcastic when we say it couldn't have happened to a nicer guy...
4 Antonin Dolohov
A cold killer, Antonin Dolohov actually spent two spells in Azkaban before his presumed death at the Battle of Hogwarts. He's first put in there for the murders of Gideon and Fabian Prewett, both of which were key Order of the Phoenix members at the time of their passing.
He gets put in there again for getting caught at the Ministry of Magic during the Death Eaters' failed mission to retrieve the prophecy. Dolohov breaks free and serves Lord Voldemort again but, thankfully, gets his comeuppance. He riles the Dark Lord when, in the Deathly Hallows: Part 1, he allows Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione to escape - despite the odds being stacked against them.
3 Dolores Umbridge
Even typing the name Dolores Umbridge makes our blood boil, with the repulsive individual one of the worst characters in the hole of Harry Potter. Rather annoyingly the only spends time in Azkaban after the final book.
She's imprisoned for all her crimes against muggles - but really deserved to spend the rest of her days in there. Umbridge is awful as a teacher, torturing her students for even the tamest of crimes. We're glad she finally got her comeuppance in the end, even if we couldn't savor it.
2 Barty Crouch Jr
Barty Crouch Jr was always going to come high on this list - and he gets the silver medal. When he's brought before a trial in Azkaban prison he's a shaky and scared figure. But it appears this is all just an act.
Crouch Jr is actually evil to the core. When his mother sacrifices herself, he's placed under the Imperius Curse by his father. However he ends up managing to shake it off and, when he does, straight away does Lord Voldemort's bidding again. He murders his dad and helps the Dark Lord return to power before eventually having his soul sucked out by the Dementors. Something he definitely deserved.
1 Bellatrix Lestrange
Bellatrix Lestrange gets the gold - a medal she'd no doubt love to receive if it was Lord Voldemort dishing them out. She is the Dark Lord's most-faithful Death Eater and is put behind bars for torturing Frank and Alice Longbottom into insanity.
She also murders Sirius Black after breaking free from Azkaban in the Order of the Phoenix and fights by her master's side at the Battle of Hogwarts. Fortunately, she's murdered by Molly Weasley in combat - something that prompts Voldemort into turning his wand on her. Harry Potter then casts a shield charm and saves the day, re-emerging after many had presumed him dead.
